REVIEWS / READERS AND PUBLISHERS COMMENTS
Organic Alice and the Wiggly Jiggly Worms is a children’s book inspired by personal life experience. Jenny Hall set up, along with her partner Keith, an organic vegetable box scheme called Sow & Grow Organics. This book is the first of a series of four, aimed at raising awareness in young kids about the dynamics and secrets of vegetable farming. Written in a nursery rhyme rhythm, it shows and explains how the soil is brought back to life with the creatures that inhabit it. In other words, it opens the eyes of the reader to a completely new, fascinating world, inhabited by mini-beasts that make it alive. Aside from being a brilliant children’s book, Organic Alice and the Wiggly Jiggly Worms also contains precious notes for adult readers, to enable them to explain to their kids food production. Through the pages of Organic Alice all the true love of the author for healthy, sustainable lifestyle is visible. In fact, at a deeper level, this writing serves as a sparkling introduction to sustainable living in general, organic food being just the first step to it. As the author herself has stated, "farming is a reoccurring theme in the literature of children up to the age of seven, but it is hard to find something truly educational about food production." In this work, technical handy hints on how to "grow your own" are provided in a simple, enjoyable way, melting the pleasure of children’s literature into the usefulness of a technical guide. The message in this book is therefore also an invitation to explore the world of organic agriculture with more awareness, trying to overcome the cliché of it being essentially more expensive food. As for every issue, the more information we have about it, the more we are aware and capable of discerning, understanding and taking the right decisions. Being at the same time an entertaining read for children and a precious resource for finding out more about organic world, the Organic Alice series has a part to play in that role. Some vibrant, colourful illustrations, by Jenny Hall herself, make it an even more complete book, sure to amuse young readers and give a smile to the adult ones also.
