The fabulous world of soil
In this enjoyable children’s book, Jenny Hall takes us into the fascinating world of organic farming, where small creatures bring the soil to life
Children’s literature is packed with books about farm life, but only a few of them really explain food production. Organic Alice and the Wiggly Jiggly Worms proves to be an exception. Starting from a "grow your own" approach, the book literally goes deep down into the world of soil and introduces us the mini-beasts that inhabit it.
With a brilliant style, enriched by a charming nursery rhyme rhythm, the book cannot help but capture the attention of young readers up to the age of seven. They will gently discover some precious lessons about organic agriculture, a new and fascinating world. The book also contains useful notes for adult readers, who can help their kids understand real-life food production.
Organic Alice and the Wiggly Jiggly Worms proves to be an enjoyable testament to organic food and healthy living in general. Colourful illustrations by the author herself enrich the message and help the young readers understand basic principles of sustainable food production. Inspiring and highly enjoyable, Organic Alice and the Wiggly Jiggly Worms increases the awareness of kids (and sometimes adults) about the important role that sustainable farming has in healthy living.
Jenny Hall has been growing organic vegetables for box schemes since 1998. Her love of farming and nature dates back to a very young age, when she remembers joyously exploring that wonderful world. After years spent in environmental activism, she started her own organic vegetable box scheme called Sow & Grow Organics, with her partner Keith. This book is inspired by this venture and also her young daughter, Alice.
Organic Alice and the Wiggly Jiggly Worms is the first book of a series of four, in which all the stages of organic farming are discussed and illustrated. Wildlife characters become as real as people and with this mix of fantasy features and real "grow your own" instructions, pleasurable family learning begins.
